One of the great features about Wi-Fi modems and routers is that you can change the network broadcast name. Called an SSID, we'll refer to it as Wi-Fi name for simplicity.
Tired of your boring Wi-Fi name or insecure password? This guide will show you how to easily change both on your router in just a few steps.
Before you begin:
Make sure your computer is connected to the router wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable.
Note down the current Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, you'll need them later.
Here's what to do:
- Open your web browser: Launch any web browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press Enter.
- Login to the router: A login page will appear. Enter the username admin and password password (case-sensitive). Click "Sign In".
- Navigate to Wireless settings: Click on the "Wireless" tab located at the top of the dashboard.
- Choose your Wi-Fi band: You can see options for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Select the band you want to change the settings for.
- Edit the SSID: In the "Network Name (SSID)" field, type your new Wi-Fi name. Remember, avoid special characters and spaces for better compatibility.
- Change the password: Click on the "WPA Encryption" drop-down menu. Choose "AES" as the encryption method. Then, enter your new password in the "WPA2-Pre-Shared Key" field. Make sure it's at least 8 characters long and includes a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols for optimal security.
- Save your changes: Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the page.
- Reconnect your devices: All devices currently connected to your Wi-Fi will be disconnected due to the new settings. Simply reconnect them using your new Wi-Fi name and password.
Congratulations! You have successfully changed your Wi-Fi name and password on your ASUS router. Remember to update your saved Wi-Fi credentials on all your devices.
Additional tips:
You can repeat steps 4-7 for the other Wi-Fi band (2.4GHz or 5GHz) if you want different names and passwords for each.
For enhanced security, consider enabling additional features like MAC address filtering or guest network functionality.
If you face any difficulties or encounter errors, consult the user manual for specific troubleshooting steps.
